The story is told through both familiar and new eyes, among them Maloghurst the Twisted, Khârn of the World Eaters, the Iron Hand Castrmen Orth and Kaedes Nex, the Blood Crow, as the massacre ends any hope of a united Imperium and opens the Age of Darkness.
