Primer is the first coat on a bare model and it does two jobs: it gives paint something to grip so it does not rub off in handling, and it sets the tone everything above it sits on. A black undercoat pushes the finished model darker, white and bone shades make colors read brighter, and colored primers can save you a basecoat entirely.
